Periodonal Disease-Diagnosis

Diagnosing Periodontal Disease is an important component of any exam performed on a patient. More patients lose teeth to gum disease (which causes bone loss around teeth) than to cavities or other disease processes. Periodontal Disease can often go unnoticed by the patient for years, and in some cases is asymptomatic up until the point at which a tooth’s condition is beyond repair. Routine periodontal probing exams during hygiene recall visits are an important tool for ensuring a patient is maintaining the teeth and gums in an ideal state of health. In addition, recent medical research has proven a direct link between periodontal disease and systemic health. Many of the bacteria involved in gum disease also increase system inflammation and risk of cardiovascular disease.
